  12. window. To print pstrip.txt, open it in Notepad or another word

  30. This version of the PowerStrip is shareware. You must read and accept 
  31. the terms detailed in the license.txt file before you can use this 
  32. software. An order form is provided in the file order.txt for the 
  33. purpose of registering this software.

  35. Registered versions of the PowerStrip do not display the "PowerStrip 
  36. Demo" dialog box on start-up, and - naturally - save and restore your
  37. preferences.

  44. POWERSTRIP DESCRIPTION
  45. ======================
  46. The PowerStrip is a desktop enhancement and display control utility,
  47. specifically optimized for use with current and future 32-bit versions
  48. of Microsoft Windows. The PowerStrip works in conjunction with your
  49. display driver and graphics hardware, supporting on-the-fly color depth, 
  50. resolution, and refresh rate switching, user-defined presets, program/
  51. shortcut associations, an optional toolbar, graphics system information, 
  52. screen saving, power management, cursor controls, and extensive monitor 
  53. support. A full description of PowerStrip features can be found in the
  54. online documentation.

  57. INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING THE POWERSTRIP
  58. =========================================
  59. To install PowerStrip, you must have a PC running Windows NT or 
  60. Windows 95/98, and a graphics card or monitor specifically approved for 
  61. use with the PowerStrip. These instructions assume that you have already 
  62. successfully installed the very latest display drivers provided 
  63. by your graphics card manufacturer or by Microsoft.
  64.  
  65. NB: The PowerStrip is NOT designed for use with proprietary display 
  66.     drivers and/or firmware which deviates significantly from the chip 
  67.     vendor's reference designs.
  68.  
  69. To install PowerStrip software, carry out the following steps: 
  70.  
  71. 1. Run the included Setup program. Or to install manually, right-click 
  72.    the file pstrip95.inf file (for Windows 95/98) or the 
  73.    pstripNT.inf file (for Windows NT) using the Windows Explorer, 
  74.    and then click Install.
  75. 2. Run the PowerStrip from the PowerStrip folder in the Start menu and
  76.    double-click the PowerStrip icon on the system tray, or select
  77.    PowerStrip configuration... from the PowerStrip popup menu or 
  78.    toolbar.
  79. 3. Select color depth, resolution and refresh rate combinations of
  80.    your choice and drag-and-drop on Preset button to save setting, 
  81.    or on monitor image to preview setting.

  83. To remove the PowerStrip from your computer, select the Add/Remove
  84. option from the Control Panel, and select "PowerStrip (remove only)" 
  85. from the list.

  88. UPGRADING THE POWERSTRIP
  89. ========================
  90. When you upgrade the PowerStrip from an older version, all your presets
  91. and associations are preserved, but custom monitor information and 
  92. refresh rates will be lost. This is a deliberate safety precaution.

  95. POWERSTRIP REFRESH RATE SUPPORT
  96. ===============================
  97. The PowerStrip may include extensive refresh rate support which goes 
  98. far beyond the level of support provided by the chip vendor's BIOS and 
  99. drivers. However, this additional support requires that the PowerStrip
  100. be running. Since the PowerStrip will, of course, be loaded after the
  101. Windows desktop appears, Windows will first start up at the highest
  102. refresh rate supported directly by the driver, and only then switch to 
  103. a higher refresh rate (if enabled) when the PowerStrip loads. For
  104. example, if you have a Rendition or Riva128 accelerator and have used
  105. the PowerStrip to set the refresh rate to 150Hz, Windows will 
  106. typically startup at 120Hz (the highest rate supported directly by 
  107. Rendition and nVidia), and then switch automatically to 150Hz when the
  108. PowerStrip loads.

  111. NON-ADMINISTRATORS UNDER WINDOWS NT
  112. ===================================
  113. By default, the PowerStrip provides direct hardware support under NT 
  114. only to administrators. Non-administrator access to the PowerStrip is
  115. available on request to registered users.

  118. NOTES ON SPECIFIC CHIPSETS AND DRIVERS
  119. ======================================
  120.  
  121. AGP cards in general - Under Windows 95 you will need OSR2.1 (with USB 
  122. support installed), as well as a special VXD provided by your mainboard's
  123. chip vendor. Many graphics card vendors are automatically installing Intel's
  124. VXD driver with their display driver, but this will only work with Intel
  125. core logic. If you have one of the new Socket 7 AGP boards from VIA, SiS
  126. or ETEQ, you will need to ensure you have the appropriate GART manager
  127. installed.
  128.  
  129. Intel740 - The PowerStrip needs to use different routines to support the
  130. P852 and P854 steppings, which are autodetected. Newer silicon will likely
  131. require additional code.
  132.  
  133. ATI - PowerStrip refresh rate support will not work with ATI cards under
  134. Windows 95/98 unless you are using a Microsoft driver.
  135.  
  136. S3 ViRGE/GX2 - PowerStrip TV output controls for the GX2 under NT
  137. requires BIOS version 2.16.08 or a later release.
  138.  
  139. Matrox MGAs - PowerStrip refresh rate support will not work with 
  140. MGA cards under Windows 95/98 unless you (1) configure the Matrox
  141. PowerDesk to use a native Windows monitor, or (2) use a Microsoft driver.
  142. Under NT, if you select a Matrox monitor using the PowerDesk, your
  143. refresh rates will be limited to the ones you define using the PowerDesk.

  145. Voodoo Rush - The PowerStrip has been tested and approved for use
  146. with the AT3D and AT25 only. While the program can detect earlier Alliance
  147. chips like the AT24 and 6422, timing characteristics are likely to be very 
  148. different. BIOS version will not be reported.
  149.  
  150. Trident ProVidia 96xx - The PowerStrip is designed for use with the 9685.
  151. It is unlikely to work correctly with earlier Trident 9660/9680 chipsets.
  152. Under NT, the PowerStrip may occasionally set an incorrect custom refresh
  153. rate. 
  154.  
  155. Cirrus Logic Alpine - The PowerStrip contains optimized code for the
  156. 5436/46 and 5480; earlier 5430/34/40 chipsets are also supported in API mode.

  158. Dedicated 3D Acceleraters - PowerStrip support for dynamically switching
  159. between primary and auxiliary D3D devices has been tested with 3Dfx Voodoo
  160. Graphics I and II, and Matrox M3D/Videologic PowerVR chips only.

  163. KNOWN LIMITATIONS
  164. =================
  165.  
  166. Icon Corruption after Changing Color Depth On-the-fly
  167. -----------------------------------------------------
  168. Under Windows 95 it is possible that icons (even PowerStrip icons)
  169. may be corrupted after switching color depth dynamically. 
  170.  
  171. Multi-language Support
  172. ----------------------
  173. Some of the translated text strings may be either too long or less than
  174. accurate. If you encounter a translation error and/or can suggest a
  175. more accurate or abbreviated translation, we would appreciate your
  176. input. Naturally, we apologize in advance for any translations that
  177. are inaccurate. Translations are not available for extended Plug and
  178. Play monitor information.
  179.  
  180. UnInstall under Windows 98
  181. --------------------------
  182. Although PowerStrip files are un-installed, shell links and registry
  183. entries are not removed. This will be fixed for the retail release of
  184. Windows 98.

  186. Support for Windows NT 5.0 Beta
  187. -------------------------------
  188. Low-level hardware support under NT 5.0B1 is fully enabled in this 
  189. release. Please report any problems to support@entechtaiwan.com.
